The system

What is EES?

A digital border register that replaces the stamps in your passport.

What it records

Your passport details, a facial image and fingerprints, and the date and place of every entry and exit – and any refusal of entry.

Who it applies to

All non-EU nationals on a short stay of up to 90 days in 180 – with a Schengen visa or visa-free.

Who it does not apply to

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, and holders of a residence permit or long-stay visa of a Schengen country.

Check how long you can stay

The European Commission’s free online tool shows the days you have left, based on your EES record.

1

Open the tool

Use the official EES tool on travel-europe.europa.eu – it is free and needs no account.

2

Enter your details

Your passport number, the country that issued it and the country you will visit. Travel dates are optional.

3

Read the result

OK means your stay fits the 90/180 rule; Not OK means you do not have enough days left. It also shows your remaining days.

Open the official EES tool

An official EU website. Yari Immigration Services is not part of the EU or the EES.

Good to know

Before you rely on the result

Older stays are missing

EES does not show stays from before 10 April 2026. Count those days from your passport stamps.

A wrong record

A missing exit or a wrong date can make you look like an overstayer. Keep tickets and boarding passes and ask for a correction.

The border decides

The tool is for planning. At the border the guard checks your record, and an overstay is registered automatically.

FAQ

Questions about EES

Do I need to register in EES before I travel?

No. Your first EES registration happens at the border, when you first enter the Schengen area. There is nothing to apply for in advance.

Does EES apply to visa-free travellers?

Yes. EES applies to all non-EU nationals on a short stay – both visa holders and visa-free travellers.

I have a Dutch residence permit. Does EES apply to me?

No. Holders of a residence permit or long-stay visa of a Schengen country are not registered in EES. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are not registered either.

The tool shows the wrong number of days. What now?

Keep your evidence, such as tickets, boarding passes and receipts, and ask for the record to be corrected. We can help you with the request.
